Eliquis

Eliquis tablets

Eliquis is a blood thinner belonging to a class of medications known as anticoagulants. It works by preventing blood clots from forming in the veins or arteries, which can reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. It is also used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and to reduce the risk of these conditions recurring.

How is this medication used?

Eliquis should be taken exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The usual dose for preventing stroke and systemic embolism is 5 mg taken twice a day. Dosage may vary based on age, kidney function, and other factors. Eliquis can be taken with or without food. Do not stop taking Eliquis without talking to your doctor, as this can increase your risk of stroke.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Eliquis include bleeding more easily than normal, such as nosebleeds, heavy menstrual periods, prolonged bleeding from cuts, increased bleeding from gums, bruising easily, and a higher risk of bleeding internally. Rare but serious side effects include allergic reactions, liver problems, and a spinal or epidural hematoma, which can occur in patients who undergo a spinal procedure while on the medication.

What are the potential interactions?

Eliquis can interact with other medications, vitamins, or herbs you may be taking. An interaction is when a substance changes the way a drug works. This can be harmful or prevent the drug from working well. It's important to tell your healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, and herbs you are taking to avoid potential interactions. Some known interactions include any other blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, certain antidepressants, antifungal medications, and medicines used to treat HIV.
