Alphagan P is a prescription medication used to lower elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Its active ingredient, brimonidine tartrate, belongs to a class of drugs known as alpha adrenergic receptor agonists, which work by decreasing the amount of fluid in the eye, thereby reducing pressure within the eye.
How is this medication used?
Alphagan P is usually prescribed to be used three times a day, about 8 hours apart. The medication comes as an eye drop solution. To apply, wash your hands first, tilt your head back, and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper above the eye, squeeze out a drop, and close your eye. Apply gentle pressure to the corner of the eye (near the nose) for about 1 minute to prevent the medication from draining away. Try not to blink or rub the eye right after applying. If you are using more than one type of eye drop, wait about 5 minutes before applying the next type of eye drop.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Alphagan P include eye redness, discomfort, burning sensation, or itching; blurred vision; dry mouth; and fatigue. Although most of these effects are mild, if they persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are rare but report immediately if you experience severe swelling, redness, discomfort in or around the eye, sensitivity to light, or vision changes.
What are the potential interactions?
Alphagan P can interact with certain medications and substances, including other eye medications, blood pressure medications, MAO inhibitors, and alcohol. These interactions can increase the risk of side effects or reduce the effectiveness of Alphagan P. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, and herbs you are currently taking before starting Alphagan P.
