Boniva, also known by its generic name ibandronate, is a bisphosphonate medication used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It works by altering the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body, slowing bone loss while increasing bone mass, which may prevent bone fractures.

How is this medication used?

Boniva is typically taken once a month as a 150 mg oral tablet. It should be taken on the same day each month, in the morning at least 30 to 60 minutes before the first food, beverage, or other medication of the day. It must be swallowed whole with a full glass of plain water (6 to 8 ounces) while sitting or standing to avoid esophageal irritation. Patients should not lie down for at least 60 minutes after taking Boniva and should not eat or drink anything other than water during this time.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Boniva include back pain, indigestion, flu-like symptoms, and diarrhea. Uncommon but more serious side effects can include jaw pain indicative of osteonecrosis of the jaw, unusual thigh bone fractures, or severe allergic reactions. Patients should contact their healthcare provider if they experience severe side effects.

What are the potential interactions?

Certain medications or supplements, such as calcium, antacids, iron, and magnesium, can interfere with Boniva's absorption if taken too closely together. It's recommended to wait at least one hour after taking Boniva before consuming any other medications or supplements. Additionally, taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) along with Boniva can increase the risk of stomach or intestinal problems.
