Entresto is a prescription medication used to treat certain types of heart failure. It is a combination of two active ingredients, sacubitril and valsartan. Sacubitril is a neprilysin inhibitor that helps to increase the levels of natriuretic peptides in the body, which in turn help to reduce blood pressure and decrease fluid overload. Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) that helps to relax blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood.
How is this medication used?
Entresto is taken orally, usually twice a day. It can be taken with or without food. It's important to follow your doctor's directions closely and to not adjust your dose without your doctor's guidance. Your doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Entresto include cough, dizziness, high potassium levels, kidney problems, and low blood pressure. Less common but more serious side effects can include allergic reactions, angioedema (swelling under the skin), and fetal toxicity, meaning it can harm an unborn baby if taken during pregnancy.
What are the potential interactions?
Entresto can interact with other medications, which can either diminish its effect or increase side effects. Specifically, it should not be taken with ACE inhibitors or within 36 hours of the last dose of an ACE inhibitor. It may also have interactions with aliskiren in patients with diabetes, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), lithium, and certain other blood pressure medications. Always inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines you are taking to avoid harmful interactions.
