Flovent HFA is an inhalation aerosol steroid that is prescribed for the long-term treatment of asthma. It contains the active ingredient fluticasone propionate, which reduces inflammation in the airways, leading to improved breathing and decreased frequency of asthma attacks. Flovent HFA is not intended for the immediate relief of acute bronchospasm.

How is this medication used?

Flovent HFA is typically prescribed to be used twice daily, in the morning and evening. Shake well before each use. After exhaling fully, place the mouthpiece in your mouth and inhale deeply while pressing down on the inhaler to release the medication. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or as long as comfortable, then exhale slowly. Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after each use to reduce the risk of infection.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include headache, throat irritation, hoarseness, cough, dry mouth or throat, and fungal infections in the mouth. More serious side effects can include weakened immune system, adrenal insufficiency, growth suppression in children, glaucoma, and decreased bone density. Contact your physician if side effects are severe or persistent.

What are the potential interactions?

Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking as Flovent HFA can interact with other drugs. Specifically, interactions can occur with antifungal medicines, HIV medicines, and certain antibiotics. Also, avoid exposure to chickenpox and measles, and consult your doctor if exposed, as Flovent can weaken your immune system.
