Humalog KwikPen U-200 is a rapid-acting insulin used to control high blood sugar in adults and children with diabetes mellitus. This prefilled pen contains insulin lispro, a fast-acting analog of human insulin, designed to improve blood sugar levels post meals. It is formulated at twice the concentration of standard U-100 insulin preparations, allowing for the delivery of the same dose of insulin in half the volume.

How is this medication used?

Before using Humalog KwikPen U-200, read the patient information leaflet provided by your pharmacist. This medication is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) usually within 15 minutes before or right after meals. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. It is important to rotate injection sites with each dose to avoid skin damage. Check your insulin product visually for particles or discoloration before use. If either is present, do not use the insulin.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), reaction at the injection site (such as pain, redness, or irritation), and weight gain. Hypoglycemia is a serious side effect and can cause symptoms such as shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling hands/feet. It is crucial to have a source of sugar available at all times to counteract low blood sugar. Severe allergic reactions are rare but seek immediate medical attention if you notice symptoms such as rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

What are the potential interactions?

Many drugs can affect your blood sugar, making it harder to control. Before starting Humalog KwikPen U-200, tell your doctor about all your current medications, especially ones that decrease blood sugar (such as alpha or beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, or steroids). Alcohol, beta-blockers, and some other medications may also intensify the hypoglycemic effect of insulin. It is important to check blood sugar levels regularly and consult with your healthcare provider to adjust the dose as necessary.
