Janumet is a prescription medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a combination of two oral antihyperglycemic drugs, sitagliptin and metformin hydrochloride. Sitagliptin works by increasing levels of natural substances called incretins, which help control blood sugar by increasing insulin release, especially after a meal. Metformin works by decreasing glucose (sugar) production in the liver and decreasing absorption of glucose by the intestines. The combination of these two medications helps manage blood sugar levels more effectively than either medication alone.

How is this medication used?

Janumet should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually twice a day with meals. The dose is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Be sure to swallow the tablets whole, without crushing or chewing them. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day. Do not change your dose or stop taking Janumet without first talking to your doctor.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Janumet include upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Usually, these side effects are mild and go away over time. However, Janumet can sometimes cause more serious side effects, including lactic acidosis (a build-up of lactic acid in the blood), which is a rare but serious side effect that can be fatal. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include unusual tiredness, dizziness, severe drowsiness, chills, blue/cold skin, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, unusual stomach pain, and a slow/fast/irregular heartbeat. Contact your doctor right away if you experience any of these symptoms.

What are the potential interactions?

Janumet can interact with a number of other medications, which can affect how well Janumet or the other medications work and increase the risk of serious side effects. Common interactions include certain drugs for high blood pressure (e.g., ACE inhibitors), diuretics, corticosteroids, thyroid products, birth control pills, and other diabetes medications. Alcohol can also affect your blood sugar levels and increase the risk of lactic acidosis while you are taking Janumet. Inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal products, to manage potential interactions effectively.
