How is this medication used?

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), allergic reactions, injection site reactions, pain, redness, itching, hives, swelling, and weight gain. Serious side effects may include potassium blood level changes, heart failure in combination with certain medications, or severe allergic reactions.

What are the potential interactions?

Lantus may interact with other medications, particularly those that affect blood sugar levels. Drugs that may increase the risk of hypoglycemia if taken with Lantus include sulfonylureas, meglitinides, beta-blockers, alcohol, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Drugs that may decrease the blood sugar lowering effect of Lantus include corticosteroids, niacin, thyroid hormones, and diuretics.
