Latuda (lurasidone) is an antipsychotic medication used for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and children who are at least 13 years old, as well as for the treatment of depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults. It works by affecting certain chemicals in the brain to help decrease symptoms of psychotic disorders.

How is this medication used?

Latuda should be taken exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. It is typically taken once a day, with food (at least 350 calories). Swallow the tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it. Dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, restlessness, muscle stiffness, weight gain, and stomach pain. Serious side effects can include tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), high blood sugar, and changes in cholesterol levels. Contact your doctor if you experience severe side effects or signs of an allergic reaction.

What are the potential interactions?

Latuda may interact with other medications, which can increase the risk of serious side effects. Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbs you are taking. Avoid using alcohol as it can increase certain side effects of Latuda. Be cautious when taking other CNS depressants (such as opioids, antihistamines, or medicine for sleep or anxiety) as they can exacerbate side effects.
