NuvaRing is a flexible, vaginal ring used as a form of birth control. It releases a combination of estrogen and progestin hormones to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

How is this medication used?

To use NuvaRing, insert the ring into the vagina once every month. It should remain in place for three weeks, followed by a one-week break during which you will usually have your period. After the break, insert a new ring. The ring should be inserted and removed on the same day of the week and at the same time for the three-week-on, one-week-off cycle.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include vaginal infections and irritation, headache, weight gain, nausea, vomiting, changes in your menstrual periods, abdominal pain, breast tenderness, and mood changes. Less common but more serious side effects can include blood clots, stroke, and heart attack, especially in smokers and women over 35.

What are the potential interactions?

NuvaRing may interact with other medications, reducing its effectiveness or increasing side effects. These can include drugs for HIV, hepatitis C, seizure medications, certain antibiotics and antifungals, and herbal supplements like St. John's Wort. It's important to discuss all medications and supplements you are taking with your healthcare provider.
