Provera, containing the active ingredient medroxyprogesterone acetate, is a type of female hormone (progestin). This medication is similar to the progesterone that your body naturally makes and is given to replace the hormone when your body is not making enough of it. It is often used to treat a variety of conditions, including abnormal uterine bleeding, absent or irregular menstrual periods, and as part of menopausal hormone therapy with estrogens.

How is this medication used?

Take Provera exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dosage and duration of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to therapy. It can be taken with or without food. It is important to take this medication at the same time each day to get the most benefit from it. Do not increase your dose or take this drug more often or for a longer period than directed.

What are the possible side effects?

Provera may cause side effects, including nausea, weight changes, headache, breast tenderness, bloating, dizziness, or changes in menstrual periods. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Serious side effects include unusual vaginal bleeding/discharge, yellowing eyes or skin (jaundice), mood changes (e.g., depression), severe stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, increased thirst/urination, and symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

What are the potential interactions?

Provera can interact with other medications, which can affect how it works or increase the risk of serious side effects. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products, especially of: aminoglutethimide, drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove Provera from your body (such as rifampin, St. John's wort, certain anticonvulsants like phenytoin, and phenobarbital). Provera may interfere with certain laboratory tests, possibly causing false test results. Make sure laboratory personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug.
