Saxenda (liraglutide) is an injectable prescription medicine used for adults with excess weight (BMI ≥27) who also have weight-related medical problems or obesity (BMI ≥30), and children aged 12-17 years with a body weight above 60 kg and obesity to help them lose weight and keep the weight off. Saxenda is not a weight-loss medicine or appetite suppressant. Saxenda is similar to a naturally occurring hormone in the body and works by helping control your appetite, which can lead to reduced calorie intake and weight loss.
How is this medication used?
Saxenda is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) once daily, at any time of day, with or without food. It should be administered in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The dose of Saxenda should be increased gradually as directed by your healthcare provider to reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal side effects. Do not use Saxenda if you are allergic to liraglutide or any of its ingredients.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Saxenda include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, headache, vomiting, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), decreased appetite, indigestion, and fatigue. Serious side effects can include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems, and increased heart rate. Saxenda may also increase the risk of thyroid tumors, including cancer. It's important to talk to your doctor about the potential risks before starting Saxenda.
What are the potential interactions?
Saxenda may interact with other medications, which can change how Saxenda works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking, especially insulin, sulfonylurea medicines or other medicines for diabetes, and any medications for weight management. The risk of low blood sugar may be higher when Saxenda is taken with these drugs. It's crucial to monitor your blood sugar levels closely if you're taking Saxenda with other medicines that lower blood sugar.
