Sensipar (cinacalcet) is a medication used for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, and for the treatment of hypercalcemia in patients with parathyroid carcinoma and primary hyperparathyroidism who cannot undergo parathyroidectomy. It works by decreasing levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, and phosphorus in the body, helping to normalize their levels.

How is this medication used?

Sensipar should be taken exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. It is typically taken with food or shortly after a meal. The dosage depends on the individual's condition, response to treatment, and laboratory test results. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablets.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Sensipar include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness. Less common but more serious side effects may occur, such as low calcium levels, which can lead to muscle spasms, twitching, cramps, or seizures. Contact your doctor if you experience severe side effects or symptoms that do not improve.

What are the potential interactions?

Sensipar can interact with other medications, which can affect how it works or increase the risk of serious side effects. These include strong CYP3A4 inhibitors like ketoconazole, certain seizure medications, and other drugs that can lower blood calcium levels. Always inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal supplements.
