Singulair, also known by its generic name montelukast, is a prescription medication used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children as young as 12 months old. It is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the air passages in the lungs) in people who are not already taking this medicine for other conditions. Additionally, it helps to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as sneezing, stuffy, runny, or itchy nose.

How is this medication used?

Singulair is usually taken once daily in the evening for prevention of asthma or allergy symptoms. For exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, take a single dose at least 2 hours before exercising, and avoid using another dose for at least 24 hours. Follow your doctor's instructions closely, and do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Singulair include stomach pain, heartburn, upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, tiredness, fever, stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, and hoarseness. Serious side effects could include allergic reactions, mood changes (such as agitation, aggression, hallucinations), anxiousness, depression, or suicidal thoughts and actions. Consult your doctor if you experience any severe or persistent side effects.

What are the potential interactions?

Singulair may interact with certain medications or supplements, including aspirin, warfarin, thyroid hormones, sedatives, antifungal drugs, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital. It's important to tell your doctor about all medications, vitamins, or herbs you're taking to avoid potential interactions. Alcohol and other CNS depressants may enhance the sedative effect of montelukast.
