Symbicort is a prescription medication used for the control and prevention of asthma in adults and children 6 years and older, as well as for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults. It combines two active ingredients: budesonide, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, and formoterol, a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) that helps to relax muscles in the airways to improve breathing.

How is this medication used?

To use Symbicort, shake the inhaler well for 5 seconds before each use. Inhale two puffs in the morning and two puffs in the evening, about 12 hours apart, or as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not use Symbicort more often than directed, and do not use it as a rescue inhaler for sudden asthma or COPD symptoms. Make sure to rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after each use to help prevent infections in the mouth and throat.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Symbicort include headache, throat irritation, nausea, vomiting, upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, flu-like symptoms, back pain, nasal congestion, stomach discomfort, and oral candidiasis (yeast infection of the mouth). More serious side effects can occur, including increased risk of asthma-related death, pneumonia in COPD patients, adrenal insufficiency, and decreased bone density. Contact your doctor if you experience severe side effects or signs of allergic reaction.

What are the potential interactions?

Symbicort can interact with certain medications, so it's important to inform your healthcare provider about all the drugs you are taking, especially other inhaled corticosteroids or LABAs, beta-blockers, diuretics, anti-fungal agents, and anti-HIV medications. These interactions can increase the risk of side effects or reduce the effectiveness of Symbicort. Avoid contact with people who have contagious diseases such as chickenpox or measles, and consult your doctor for preventive measures if exposed.
