Travatan Z is a prescription medication in the form of eye drops and is used to lower elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It contains the active ingredient travoprost, which is a synthetic prostaglandin analog. Travatan Z works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor, the fluid in the eye, thereby reducing the pressure inside the eye.

How is this medication used?

Travatan Z eye drops are usually applied once daily in the evening to the affected eye(s). To apply the drops, wash your hands first. Tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper directly over the eye and apply one drop in the pocket. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Try not to blink or rub your eye. Do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface to avoid contamination.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Travatan Z include eye redness, discomfort, blurred vision, dry eyes, and itching. Some patients may experience changes in eyelash length, thickness, and number, as well as a change in eye color over time. Rare but serious side effects include eye infection, severe eye irritation, and vision changes. If you experience any severe side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing, seek immediate medical attention.

What are the potential interactions?

Travatan Z can interact with other eye medications, especially those applied directly to the eye. To avoid interactions, wait at least 5 minutes before applying any other eye medication. Also, be sure to inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently using, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products. Using Travatan Z with certain other medications may affect its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects.
