Aldara
Aldara (Imiquimod) is a topical medication used to treat certain types of skin conditions such as actinic keratosis (due to excessive sun exposure), superficial basal cell carcinoma, and external genital warts. It works by stimulating the immune system to fight abnormal skin growths.
How is this medication used?
Aldara is typically applied to the affected area 2 to 5 times a week, depending on the condition being treated, for up to 16 weeks. The cream should be applied before bedtime, left on the skin for approximately 8 hours, and then washed off with mild soap and water.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Aldara include redness, swelling, itching, burning, skin peeling, and hardening under the skin. Flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle pain, and headache may also occur. If you experience severe skin reactions or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor immediately.
What are the potential interactions?
Aldara may interact with other topical medications leading to increased skin irritation or decreased effectiveness of either treatment. It's important to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are using before starting Aldara. Avoid using other skincare products on the treatment area unless directed by your doctor.
