How is this medication used?

The starting dosage of apremilast is typically a titration pack that gradually increases the dose over the first five days to reach the recommended maintenance dose. Initially, patients might start with 10 mg of apremilast once on the first day, increasing the dose by 10 mg increments daily up to a maintenance dose, usually 30 mg twice daily. Apremilast can be taken with or without food, and it is important to follow the prescribed dosing schedule closely.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of apremilast include diarrhea, nausea, upper respiratory tract infections, tension headache, and headache. Some patients may experience reduced weight or depressive symptoms. While most of the side effects are mild to moderate in severity, any new or worsening symptoms should be reported to a healthcare provider.

What are the potential interactions?

While apremilast has a lower potential for drug-drug interactions due to its specific mode of action and metabolic pathway, it is still important to notify healthcare providers of all medications being taken, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Use of certain strong cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers should be avoided as they can significantly reduce apremilast plasma concentrations, potentially leading to a reduction in efficacy.
