Breo Ellipta
Breo Ellipta is a prescription inhalation powder that combines two active ingredients, fluticasone furoate, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, and vilanterol, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) that helps to relax the muscles around the airways in the lungs to make breathing easier. It is used for the maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and to control asthma in adults.
How is this medication used?
Breo Ellipta is administered via oral inhalation. Patients are typically advised to inhale the contents of one Blister once daily using the Ellipta inhaler. It is important to use the inhaler at the same time every day. Do not use the inhaler more than once in a 24-hour period. Patients should not take the inhaler apart or wash the mouthpiece or any part of the device. Always read and follow the instructions provided with the medication for use, clean, and store the inhaler.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Breo Ellipta include nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection, headaches, and oral candidiasis. Other side effects may include bronchitis, sinusitis, flu, back pain, and pneumonia. Serious side effects can occur and include increased blood pressure, fast or irregular heartbeat, bone fractures, eye problems like glaucoma and cataracts, and worsening of existing tuberculosis, fungal, bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections, including herpes infection of the eye. Using a LABA medication alone without a corticosteroid may increase the risk of asthma-related death.
What are the potential interactions?
Breo Ellipta can interact with certain medications and substances, including strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ritonavir, ketoconazole, clarithromycin, which may increase the plasma concentration of fluticasone furoate or vilanterol and may increase the risk of systemic corticosteroid side effects. Beta-blockers may weaken the effect of vilanterol. MAO inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, and drugs that prolong the QT interval may increase the risk of cardiovascular side effects. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
