Combigan
Combigan is a prescription eye drop medication used to reduce eye pressure in individuals with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It contains two active ingredients, brimonidine tartrate and timolol maleate, which work together to decrease eye pressure. Brimonidine tartrate is an alpha agonist that reduces the amount of fluid in the eye, while timolol maleate is a beta blocker that slows the formation of fluid in the eye.
How is this medication used?
Use Combigan eye drops exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Typically, it is applied in the affected eye(s) twice a day, about 12 hours apart. Before use, wash your hands and shake the bottle. While tilting your head back, pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper above the eye with the tip down and squeeze out a drop. Close your eyes for 2 to 3 minutes without blinking or squinting. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of the eye for about 1 minute, to prevent the medication from draining into your tear duct.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Combigan include eye redness, itching, burning sensation, blurred vision, dry eyes, and foreign body sensation in the eye. Less common side effects can include dizziness, fatigue, and dry mouth. It is important to contact your doctor if you experience severe side effects such as swelling of the eye, severe eye discomfort, difficulty breathing, or changes in heart rate.
What are the potential interactions?
Combigan can interact with certain medications, including high blood pressure medications, heart medications, antidepressants, and other eye drops that reduce eye pressure. It is important to inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal treatments you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions. Additionally, because Combigan contains a beta blocker, it may interact with substances that have a depressive effect on the central nervous system, including alcohol.
