Dorzolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used as an ophthalmic solution to lower intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma.

How is this medication used?

Use dorzolamide eye drops exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Wash your hands before use. Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and apply the medicine into the pocket. Do not touch the tip of the dropper to avoid contamination. Close your eyes for 2-3 minutes and press gently on the inner corner of the eye. Use the drops regularly at the same times each day to get the most benefit.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects may include bitter taste, burning or stinging in the eye, eye discomfort, dry eyes, and blurred vision. More serious side effects could include severe eye pain, signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, difficulty breathing), or signs of a blood cell disorder (fever, chills, sore throat, weakness).

What are the potential interactions?

Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal products. Dorzolamide may interact with other carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, salicylates like aspirin, and high doses of oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, increasing the risk of side effects.
