Levofloxacin

How is this medication used?

Levofloxacin is usually taken once a day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. For best results, take levofloxacin at the same time each day. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully, and never take more or less than prescribed. The length of your treatment depends on the type of infection you have.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include nausea, headache, dizziness, insomnia, constipation, and skin sensitivity to sunlight. Serious side effects can occur, including tendon rupture, nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), serious mood or behavior changes, or low blood sugar levels. If you experience significant side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

What are the potential interactions?

Levofloxacin can interact with certain medications, including antacids, sucralfate, vitamin or mineral supplements that contain iron or zinc, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These interactions can make levofloxacin less effective or increase side effects. Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds, as levofloxacin can make you sunburn more easily.
