Metrogel
Metrogel is a topical prescription medication formulated as a gel, which contains the antibiotic metronidazole. It is primarily used for treating rosacea, a skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in the face. How is this medication used?
Apply Metrogel to the affected areas of your face once or twice daily, as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Before applying the gel, clean and dry the affected area. Apply a thin layer of the gel to the affected area and gently rub in. Do not apply Metrogel near your eyes, mouth, or open wounds.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Metrogel include skin irritation, dryness, redness, burning, or stinging where the medication is applied. More severe side effects, although rare, may include watery eyes, skin discoloration, and numbness or tingling of the skin. Contact your healthcare provider if side effects are severe or do not go away.
What are the potential interactions?
Metrogel may interact with blood thinners like warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Alcohol or products containing propylene glycol should be avoided during treatment and for at least 24 hours after the last application because they may cause a disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, nausea, vomiting). Inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
