Neupro
Neupro is a prescription medication used for treating Parkinson's disease and moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). It belongs to a class of drugs known as dopamine agonists, which work by mimicking the action of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a natural substance in the brain that helps control movement and affects mood. Neupro is administered through a skin patch that delivers the medication continuously throughout the day.
How is this medication used?
Use Neupro exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Apply the patch to clean, dry, hairless skin on the front or side of your upper body (such as your chest, stomach, upper arms, or thighs). Avoid areas where the skin is oily, irritated, or damaged. Press down the patch firmly with your hand for about 30 seconds to make sure it sticks. Change the patch at about the same time each day. Do not wear more than one patch at a time. If a patch falls off, apply a new one.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Neupro include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, and application site reactions such as redness or irritation. More serious side effects can include hallucinations, confusion, changes in blood pressure, or allergic reactions. It's important to contact your healthcare provider if you experience any severe side effects or symptoms that do not go away.
What are the potential interactions?
Neupro can interact with other medications, which can affect how Neupro or the other medications work. It is important to tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Neupro may interact with antipsychotics, antidepressants, some antibiotics, and other medications that affect dopamine levels. Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants should be used cautiously, as they can increase the sedative effect of Neupro.
