Rifaximin is an antibiotic medication used primarily to treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), travelers' diarrhea, and hepatic encephalopathy. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria that cause diarrhea and inflammation.
How is this medication used?
Rifaximin should be taken as directed by your doctor, usually with or without food. For travelers' diarrhea, the typical dose is 200mg taken three times a day for 3 days. For IBS-D, the dose is usually 550mg taken three times a day for 14 days. For hepatic encephalopathy, the dose is 550mg taken twice a day.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, dizziness, and fatigue. Less common but more serious side effects include allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing, as well as severe diarrhea caused by an antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
What are the potential interactions?
Rifaximin can interact with other medications, such as warfarin, by altering the blood-thinning effects. It is also important to avoid certain live bacterial vaccines during treatment. Alcohol should be used with caution, as it may exacerbate liver conditions.
