How is this medication used?

Rosuvastatin is usually taken once a day, with or without food. The dosage depends on your medical condition, response to treatment, age, and other medications you may be taking. It's important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high cholesterol do not feel sick.

What are the possible side effects?

The side effects of rosuvastatin can include headache, muscle pain, abdominal pain, weakness, and nausea. Rarely, it can cause muscle problems (which can rarely lead to very serious conditions called rhabdomyolysis and autoimmune myopathy) and liver issues. Notify your doctor right away if you experience unexplained muscle pain or weakness, especially with fever, unusual tiredness, or dark colored urine.

What are the potential interactions?

Rosuvastatin can interact with other medications, vitamins, or herbs you may be taking. An interaction is when a substance changes the way a drug works. This can be harmful or prevent the drug from working well. To help avoid interactions, your doctor should manage all of your medications carefully. Tell your doctor about all medications, vitamins, and herbs you are taking. For example, using anticoagulants ('blood thinners') or drugs like gemfibrozil, fenofibrate, and niacin with rosuvastatin may increase the risk of muscle problems.
