Ventolin Inhaler
A Ventolin inhaler is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and increases air flow to the lungs. It's commonly used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in people with reversible obstructive airway disease, and to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.
How is this medication used?
To use the Ventolin inhaler, remove the cap and shake the inhaler well. Breathe out fully, put the mouthpiece into your mouth, and close your lips around it. Press down on the inhaler to release the medication as you start to breathe in slowly. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly. If prescribed more than one puff, wait about 1 minute before taking the second puff and shake the inhaler again before use.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects include nervousness, shaking, headache, mouth/throat dryness or irritation, changes in taste, cough, nausea or dizziness. Serious side effects may include worsening breathing problems, chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, severe hypertension, and hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, urticaria, and angioedema.
What are the potential interactions?
Ventolin may interact with other medications such as beta-blockers, diuretics, digoxin, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and tricyclic antidepressants, potentially increasing the risk of side effects.
