How is this medication used?

Yaz is typically taken once a day, every day at the same time. It is important to follow the package instructions carefully, starting with the first pill in the packet and taking one pill daily, following the order indicated until the pack is finished. After completing a 28-day cycle pack, a new pack is started the next day. For Yaz to be most effective, it must be taken as directed and at regular intervals.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Yaz include nausea, vomiting, headache, bloating, breast tenderness, swelling of the ankles/feet (fluid retention), and weight change. More serious side effects can include blood clots, high blood pressure, and gallbladder disease. It is important to seek medical advice if experiencing symptoms such as unusual changes in vaginal bleeding, lumps in the breast, mood changes, severe stomach or abdominal pain, dark urine, or yellowing of the eyes/skin.

What are the potential interactions?

Yaz can interact with several types of medications and substances, which might reduce its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects. These include drugs that induce cytochrome P450 enzymes, such as some anticonvulsants, antitubercular drugs, and antibiotics. It can also interact with herbal products that contain St. John’s Wort, HIV/Hepatitis C virus protease inhibitors, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
